Enable scan function on networked Win7 computer

I have a Canon MP600 (all in one printer) connected via USB to my desktop XP-SP3 computer. After adding a Win 7 64 bit laptop, I am able to use the printer from the laptop via my home network, but the scanner function is unavailable. The scanner does not appear on the laptop's device manager. What steps are necessary to enable this?
    Thank you!

Have you tried to right click on the scanner's icon on the main computer and SHARE it?

I don't have a scanner right now... but this always worked in XP.

Also note that in Win7 a shared USB device that is turned off may not be visible in My Network.

Thanks, that was something I hadn't considered, but right-clicking on the image scanning device in XP's Device Manager does not provide a Sharing option. I don't know where else to look to enable sharing for the scanner.
