I am pretty sure if it didnt work when hooked directly to the Win7 PC... it isnt going to work when shared off the XP machine.

And... you will still need a driver! Which will be isnt available for 64bit OS. There is a slim chance the 32 bit driver may work... but I too am human and therefore wrong occasionally!

One reason there is an "Additional drivers" in the shared printer's properties dialog box is to add drivers for that printer for other OS's. For example, my Win7 Ultimate 64bit PC acts as both a print and media server to my other PC's, 3 of which are Win7 (2 32bit, 1 64bit), one still XP 32bit. My "server" has the drivers for all 3 OS's and the "clients" pulled their drivers from the "server" when I installed the drivers.

So... pcastric, were you able to try the Vista drivers when connected directly to printer? If so, what happened?

Ok... it turns out you may be right about this. I'll let you take it from here...

I purchased thre Windows Anytime Upgrade from Window 7 Home Premium to Professional in order to get XP functionality. What the upgrade did was install a Virtual PC which mimics an XP machine.

I launched the Virtual PC and XP was launched. I was able to install the C500 printer and driver. I hooked up my C500 printer to my new laptop and tried to print text I entered into the notepad and nothing happened.

    What now????

Were you trying to print from XP Mode or Win7?

Trying to print from XP mode.

I tried printing from the Win 7 mode. To test printing in Win 7, I typed something in notepad, clicked print - in the print window, my printer is not displayed in the list of printers that I can send the printing to.

The wife already knows that the printer is not compatible with Win 7. I just spent the past 2-hours with Dell support - tech downloaded a similar driver but no go.

I will probably go out and purchase a cheap printer and whenever I have to print laser quality, I'll do it on my old laptop which my laser works on.

I will probably also call Lexmark and ask if they could recommend a driver which is compatible with the C500.

In any case, I will let you guys know what happens.

    Thanks again for your suggestions.

I hope nobody minds if I jump in here with one more of my suggestions...

You still don't need to do that... if you get file sharing working between the two machines you can open the file, which is on the Win7 machien, from the XP machine (I gather you have the software installed there as well) and print it from there...

If you dont need color, there are some pretty good and inexpensive laser printers out there! Many including built in wireless today!

I got an $80 Brother 19 months ago and after I used up the starter cartridge... I'm still printing on 1st full cartridge! 14 months later, and when I recently checked my printer properties; it still shows 34% life left!! And I print a lot!

    Ongoing printer story....

It's Tuesday, April 27, 2010, the weather outside is cold and it snowed most of the day and turned into rain then turned into snow once more and I still cannot print!

As noted in my previous emails, I upgraded my Win 7 home ultimate to Win 7 Professional. My Win 7 laptop is talking to my XP laptop and vice versa.

I launched the XP mode on my Win 7 laptop and was able to install the Lexmark C500 printer and driver. I loaded notepad, typed a few words and tried to print - still no go.

Called Lexmark support and pointed out that the printer had successfully been installed on the XP mode and still could not print. Tech replied my C500 was old technology (10 years old) and not supported. Pointed out that it did work on my XP mode as the XP Mode was not a "true XP box" and therefore the real OS was still Win 7 eventhough I was in the XP mode.

Is the tech correct in his statement or is he just trying to sell me a new printer?
