Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor

Price difference between these are $50! I would go with AMD for my new machine, if i didnt already have the Intel board in it
Well, if you compare the benchmarks on these CPU's from a website such as this (PassMark Software - CPU Benchmarks - List of Benchmarked CPUs), you will see the following scores
Intel Q8300 at 2.5Ghz: 3563. Ranks at 73
AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus at 2.6Ghz: 3123. Ranks at 100

As far as bang for the buck goes, the Q8300 is $148.99 at NewEgg with Free Shipping, while the AMD Athln II X4 620 is $97.99 with Free Shipping. So the price difference is exactly $51.

I guess many of you don't remember the old days when the price difference was HUGE between the two. It used to be that the Intel chip was $400 while the AMD chip was $175. This was substantial and would be worth a small decrease in performance.

However, for me, the performance difference between these 2 chips is worth $51. And honestly, compared to the complete price of my system...$51 amounts to about 3.5% of my entire system. That's about the price of a nice keyboard, nice mouse, 1 new game, etc. Put another way, if I am going to invest in a modular power supply, an SSD drive for my OS, a $300+ video card, a super nice cooler for my CPU....why would I skimp on my processor for a savings of $51???
While that might be true, i reckon that the best solution for a person who wants a low budget PC, is to go with AMD.

Yes, without a doubt...AMD has cheaper processor options even if they do result in lower performance. I'm not anti AMD in any way shape or form. I have 2 of their CPU's in 2 of my machines. It all comes down to what you are trying to accomplish and what want to spend. But I don't think it's fair to say across the board that Intel is overpriced and AMD is always "best bang for the buck".

I just find it funny when somebody wants to build a machine on a middle of the road budget that anytime I suggest sticking with an Intel CPU for performance reasons, the AMD fans come out screaming like I have made a terrible mistake and have just screwed over the end user.

lol, the only Intel PC in the house is my daughters HP-Mini netbook with an Atom processor. My main rig is an Athlon II X4 620 Quad Core, backup rig is an Athlon XP 3200+. I also have an Athlon XP 1800+ and a lowly Athlon 1100 still in use. It's all about budget for me. I don't have a lot to spend on PC hardware so I usually end up starting with a bare bones system. The AMD systems seem to be the best bang for the buck and the most complete systems.

I admit to being a semi AMD fanboy. I root for the underdog so to say and long for the day when AMD releases a more powerful, cheaper chip than Intel, like back in the early 2000's again.

You also gotta remember that AMD provides a easy upgrade route without buying a new motherboard. One can have an AMD Athlon x2 and be able to upgrade to the new AMD Phenom II x6, oh and Tigerdirect has them on sale right now..... AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8GHz 6-Core CPU for $149!! - Legit Reviews

That's kinda right... Some cheaper boards may only support processors up to 95W TDP--the X6 is 125W TDP. But, even if you have to buy a new board, you can get some good AMD boards for not too much $.
