The driver mentioned above did not work. It says that it "Cannot install drivers. No Inter(R) Adapters are present in this computer.
Any other ideas? Does Windows 7 simply not work with my computer?

    Cheers!

Windows 7 works other than this missing driver, right? Your PC is an older machine and a brand name which sometimes use "specialy manufactured" devices. Most likely it is driver or you have a bad NIC (Network Interface Card). Honestly a new NIC is much less expensive... $20 or so...

Just a thought, is the network card turned on in BIOS?

I thought of the idea to replace my network card. I found a 3com 3c905b-tx card. Found a thread on the Internet that helped me install the right driver correctly. Connected to internet and voilą.

    Thanks for all your help!

try to install the driver under compatibility mode and as administrator.

click on the driver then go to properties u will see a list of previous os's which u can chose one to install under that compatibility
