Printer installs locally but not over network.

I have a Canon i560 printer that is hooked up to a box running XP Pro SP3. My main system, running Windows 7 can see "printer on XP box" but when it tried to find a driver for it (including searching windows update) if fails.

For curiosity's sake, I plugged the printer in locally and after a bit of searching (windows update) it found a driver and installed it no problem.

I then took hooked the printer back up to the XP box and ran through the "add a printer" once more to no avail!

My main rig is running Windows 7 x64. My tablet running Windows 7 x86 had no issue picking up the networked printer and finding a driver to install. I just don't get why it can see it locally but not otherwise.

Where does windows 7 stash driver files is pulls from windows update? If I knew that, I could force an install of the driver when going through the wizard.

    Thanks for the reply YupYup,

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the mess in there. It's not likely I will find what I'm looking for that way.

Any other ideas as to how I can get it to install?

You don't need to know the exact location of the driver, just point to the repository when asked and it will search for you.

    Hi Guys
I've requested this to be in the tutorials as I've posted it so many times

Here's how to share printers w7 (or even VISTA) with XP (any version of W7 x-64 / x86)

See 5th post - the one by me in this thread.

    Jimbo, you are the goods.

I've spent the last several hours trying to network a canon printer and nearly went bald in the process.

Is this something that The Boys In Redmond will fix before W7 ships?
