Windows 7: Removable USB drive

Removable USB drive

I have an HP Pavillion (Core i7), Win7 Home Premium 64 bit, 8GB RAM with a 500 GB removable USB (personal media) drive. Every couple of days or so, the scheduled backup starts failing (to this drive) with the following error.
"..the system cannot find the file specified 0x80070002.."

Also, I am seeing lots of the following (outside the timeframe of the backup) in the event log; they seem to show up when the backups are failing and not when the backups are succeeding:
"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation."

I believe the errors are related. I have done some investigation and determined:
1) if I remove the USB drive for a few seconds, then reinsert it, then backups succeed again (for a while)
2) After a failure, when I run the HP-provide H/W diagnostic on the USB storage device, the test fails with code #HD535-5W ("There was an error getting total number of sectors") until I remove and reinsert the drive - then the test passes and all is well again until the next occurrence.

No help (so far) from HP.

Any ideas?

HP supplied a relacement USB device, but the problem persists. Another symptom, when the failures start to occur, when I look at the drive in Windows Explorer, either no files/folders are listed, or only the top-level files/folders.

I know MS identified and created a hotfix for this issue, but it was for the NVidia chipset; I have Intel x58 chipset. I haven't found any new drivers for that chipset, nor info from MS regarding a hotfix/resolution for my condition.

files in the C: drive - removable?
In the root of the C: drive there are numerous files with names like {0B6AF6FF-46CD-4E3F-BA2B-928D071D3561} Nearly all are 3KB, so they don't take up much space, but they clutter up the directory. They appear to be binary data of some sort. Any idea where they come from? Windows update? Can...
