Go by color, master IDE connector should be black, slave is grey.
So... yes, end to end should be master. But if you use the cable select jumper on the drive, it shouldn't matter.

What I don't understand is... this worked before didn't it?
Are you sure something didn't happen physically to the connection?

My old set up worked be4 (IDE on slave). My PSU died recently and I was pulling cable out to reconnect and check. When I was able to turn on, the IDE was not recognized, window was looking for a driver. Disk Management to add drive name. However, everything that is on the drive cannot be seen.

My new PSU is coming on tuesday, so I will check again with this new set up. I also just learned about cable select, wow....I never knew about that.

BTW, what is CLJ setting on my jumper setting?

The CLJ jumper limits the drive capacity, don't change that.

Have you checked the drive's IDE connector for a bent pin?
You've plugged the IDE cable and the power supply cable in.

You need CB (cable select) if you having problem with managing that just take the jumper out and connect drive to the cable.. I think it was working before because the cable end was correctly connected but when you reconnected you didn't put it back as it was ..we all do that sometimes or a pin bent or the cable not plugged in properly.. good luck.

actually it really doesn't matter where you put it on the cable...

what matters is how you set up your jumpers...

rule of thumb is that you always put your hard drive at the end of the cable....which will be the primary... secondary will be in the middle.

If you are going to use a secondary IED hard drive they want you to use the secondary IED, don't put two IED hard drives on the same ribbon.

I would put your primary hard drive using the MASTER jumper and if you put a secondary IED device on the same ribbon... then just either use CABLE SELECT or SLAVE... It also depends on the BIOS your using as well becuase alot of them treat them differently.
