Canon MX850 - Anyone get network scanner to work?

I have a Canon MX850 all-in-one printer/scanner. I cannot for the life of me get networking scanning to work on Windows 7 x64 7100. Win7 detects the network printer, but for whatever reason I can't get the scanning to work over network. If anyone has some good instructions for setting this up, let me know. I've tried Canon's IJ Scan Utility, but it finds no scanners. I've installed the driver manually, but then Device Manager just says "Canon MX850 ser Network", but I think it is supposed to include the IP address in the device name.

    Ideas?

No luck here. The printer works fine as well as the built in copy and fax functions but the scanner is a no go. I contacted Canon for info on Windows 7 beta or upcoming drivers and their response was that they had no information on Windows 7 drivers. Not much help there.

I couldn't even get the IP scanner to work with Vista x64, which should be a supported OS now.

I'm having the same problem with a Brother multi-function network printer. Brother says they won't have Windows 7 drivers until December. I can get everything to work with a USB connection but not over the network.

Here's how I got things working under 7 x64 Ultimate:

    1. Pop in the installation CD. Select custom install.
    2. Install the MP drivers, Canon IJ Network Tool, My Printer, ScanSoft OmniPage SE, and the MP Navigator software. If you want to install everything else, knock yourself out.
    3. After that's done, reboot.
    4. Go to the Canon MX850 website, and download My Printer v2 and the IJ Network driver.
    5. Install the updated My Printer.
    6. Extract the IJ Network driver, then go to the mx850sndwin250a_ntwin250aen\mx850sndwin250a_ntwin250aen\LANUTIL\English folder. Run the setup application. You should now have the network scan utility in your tray.
    7. On your printer, press the scan button. Your computer should now be listed.

On Win 7 x86, I just installed directly from the disc, then I only downloaded the updated software (no drivers) from the Canon website. The scanner worked over the network perfectly without any need to update anything.

Hope that helps. I'm hoping Canon will release Windows 7 drivers in September or early October, before the official launch.

Link to Drivers on Canon Website:

    I was able to install the printer and scanner over the network without hauling the printer downstairs. I have a Linksys WRT600N router and I have all my devices with a "reserved" IP address. After the canon software and drivers installed the first time, they did not see the printer on the network. On the device and printer page it showed the printer with its MAC address. Right click on it, and it shows a menu with an option to go to the devices web page. If you look at the address, it is the 192.168.1.xxx intranet address. It is the same as addressing the routers setup page. Follow the settings and then run the canon network setup programs again. They will see the printer this time. Sorry, for not giving the specific selections; I have a great memory it is just getting short. But if you get to this point, it will be obvious for the selections. Once the Canon network driver program sees the printer, it will assign ports to the printer, fax, and scanner drivers. That should be all you need. Good Luck....and may the force be with you;

The problem is that Windows 7 is unable to detect the printer when connected to the network, hence the solution that kegobeer suggested. I have found that only installing the MP drivers works too, as the install of the drivers only (from the original install CD), also runs the printer detection.

That is, in Kegobeer's solution, in step 2 you only need to install the drivers and nothing else. The rest can be installed from the updated software on the website.

I'd be interested to know if this does not work for anyone. I've replicated this about a dozen times and it works each time.

I have worked with these Canon scanners in my line of work and have come across issues where if you do NOT let the software detect the printer during CD installation, there is a high chance you will not be able to print to it. You can manually install via tcp/ip and driver looks to be installed correctly however it have been found to not work in that sequence. I don't know exactly why the driver and tool needs to detect the printer during installation for it to work but this is how it is.

Once the printer is registered on the network, I believe you only need to install the drivers and the scan client. I believe I have a 7 client machine that doesn't have the printer driver installed yet. I'll work on that tonight and post a good install tutorial.
