930 is a smidge faster and overclocks better from what I have read.

Yeah, most if not all the boards I've looked at for i7 920 have 1-2 USB3 connections. Not many have Firewire though.

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9 (suppose to be released sometime soon)
Err.... Unless you want to spend $700 dollars on that board and need/want super duper overclocking abilities, get a UD7 or better yet, money wise, a X58A-UD5.

Gigabyte's next flag ship board Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9

    Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD9 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 XL ATX Intel Motherboard

If you do some homework, the UD5 is about the same as the UD7, except the UD7 has more phases (24 vs 12) and built in water block?

BTW if you do decide on a X58A-UD5, look for rev 2.0, there are some enhancement over rev 1

    Rev 2.0 - GA-X58A-UD5 (rev. 2.0) - GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Overview
    Rev 1.0 - GA-X58A-UD5 (rev. 1.0) - GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Overview

    I currently have rev 1.0.

And get a 930 instead of the 920.

    My two cents.

    Peace
Thanks for your opinion. Curious: why 930 over 920? They are essentially the same chip.

930 is newer, has a little higher stock clock. It's to replace the 920's.

The board I use has a firewire connection.

I'll check the price, but I may sacrifice the slight speed increase and I don't plan to do much overclocking.

I don't game or anything like that. Just software development, server, databases, and virtual machines will take most of the computing.

Firewire is pretty useless anyhow, unless you have gadgets like cameras that need it for downloads.

930 should be about the same price as the 920's. And with being newer, a little higher stock clock speed, I would get it now if I was to buy one. Over the 920, that is.

Yeah, my MiniDV camcorder uses it.

Of course I'm looking to upgrade to a flash camcorder, but that will be put off if I go with a new desktop. LOL.

Yes, the 'Egg has it for about $10 more than the 920.

While you're at Newegg, or other online retailer, you might also look for combo deals where you get both the motherboard and CPU in one package for a slightly lower price that buying them separately.

The Gigabyte X58A's DO have firewire connections on the back plate. In fact it has a mini one as well. Plus USB3 and SATA 6

Also I spoke about the X58A-UD5 here - Experience with Gigabyte motherboards?

In that same link I said....

PS. Micro Center has the Core i7-930 for $199.99 boxed!!! Don’t know how long this deal will last so… Compare New Egg @ $294.99
    and they still do.

And as stated, the 930 is the replacement for the 920, is faster (2.80 vs 2.66) and has a higher multi (22 vs 20?). You'd do well to get the 930.

BTW I'm currentl running my chip (930) at a modest 3.52gig without issue. See my system specs.

Yeah, unfortunately that would be the case. Sorry

You might call their customer service and see if they have a store near you. The one I went to is 2 hours away from me.
