I see that the device manager shows the drive as a scsii device. Not ATA.

Ok, John-here is what I suggest you do:

Close all applications down.
Go to your device manager.
Click over your optical drive.
Touch your right side of your mouse.
You will see a dropdown menu.
You will see uninstall, left click it and un-install your optical drive.
After it has competed the operation, reboot your system.
Since this drive is a "Plug and Play " device Windows 7 will detect it and install it as new hardware.
Follow the promp that says it will Install automatically.
At completion reboot.

Try a burn and report back your results.
