Windows 7: Change CPU

Change CPU

I have a XFX 5-8209 board, I just upgraded the CPU to a AMD Phenom 9650 from a Athlon dual core.
My board supports the Phenom CPU, but I’m getting blue screens code (0x000000A) and the PC shuts down. No memory upgrades or video cards, is there something that needs to done when you upgrade the CPU? Does this call for a reinstall of Win7 or just a repair?

Most likely you just need a bios update to support the new cpu? I'd head on over to XFX; you'll no doubt find what you're looking for.

Welcome to the forum signtech. That error, while rather generic, is usually caused by newly added hardware, software or updated third party drivers. It's a common one when you google (I've done google on this before for a friend). Irql_Not_Less_or_Equal. You could try downloading WhoCrashed (the free version)

WhoCrashed

But it seems something is clashing with new CPU, or it is the CPU itself. Did you physically examine it? Could you have bent a pin, or not seated it correctly?

Is this the board,

Motherboards - GeForce® Series - GeForceĀ® 8200

If you check the CPU compatibility list (which lists that board and three others similar) the new CPU is supported. Depending on how long you have had it (going on Newegg reviews the board is 2 years old or so), as Fumz said it will need a bios update from XFX.

Unfortunately you're on your own for checking that with them as they don't allow any access to their support/download pages unless you have one of their products and you register with them.

Not just any product, the product. I have two registered XFX video cards and they won't let me near the board's files.

Hi Signtech

I'm wondering if you followed procedure when changing the CPU.

Proper procedure is to reset to BIOS defaults before shutting down and installing the processor.

After installing it, you boot and immediately go into the BIOS again. Check the settings but leave everything at defaults.

Then perform a "CPU Parameter Recall" (CPR), which resets the chipset. Power down, switch off the power supply or unplug the power cord, wait 2 minutes or more, then power up and boot again.

Immediately enter the BIOS again - and load the BIOS defaults again.

Now you can re-enter your preferred BIOS settings. If you are using AHCI or RAID mode, don't forget to set "Configure SATA as" to one of them before trying to boot into Windows.

Hope that helps.

Edit: The CPR procedure is common to Asus boards. For everyone else it is probably a "Can't Hurt - Might Help" procedure.

Change default location for "Change Icon..." button?
In Windows 7, all the good icons are in %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll, but we're still taken to the old SHELL32.dll when it comes time to change an icon. Is there a registry key or something that we can change to remedy this?
