disk space problem ?

Hello everyone!I've just install a fresh new copy of windows 7 ultimate after formating my entire hard-drive, which has 320 GB ( in reality about 298 GB).I created two partitions: - C ( 48.7 Gb) - which is for the os and programs - D ( the rest of space) - which is used for data storage (music, films, etc.)The problem is that, after installing updates via windows update, programs ( freeware/opensource, not cracked versions) and device drivers ( such as for printer, scanner...). I realised that drive C has now only ~7.5 GB free of 48.5 GB. But, how can you explain this, considering that those programs installed should consume less space.I've examined every subdirectory's properties of drive C and found that they should consume less than 20 GB, including the os.So where's going the rest of space? Or, by "what" is used this space. I tried using CCleaner, but it did'nt help.I've also used windows 7 disk cleanup utility. Also, it did nothing...Thank you in anticipation.

Later Edit: After receiving alert messages from Kaspersky Internet Security, saying that Helkern MSSQL (worm) intrusion was blocked ( or sth. like that) I scanned (with updated database, virus signitures) the entire computer and found nothing.

You need at least 100g for C: drive.

Take a look here:

I generally use a software like partition magic for re-sizeing operations. But your method is good also.

So, you think I have no reason to become worried? This is normal? I only do not understand what consumes so much disk space and is not displayed as a directory.

I did hear that win 7 will cost less disk space than vista. And vista needs at least 50 GB - recommended. As far as I Know...

Thank you for your advice. Anyway, this page says that windows 7 should have at least 16 GB space on the disk for 32-bit version.

Could you explain me with more details what did you mean by "100g"? I'm a newbie in windows 7.

Thanks!

PS: sorry for double post...

Hi Kenobi, what theog meant was that although Windows will install with just 16GB, That leaves you no space for programs and such, 100GB is a good size as it is more than you should need

Thank you, too.

I'm still wondering if I have any hidden files/folders. That's because I checked every single folder inside partition C for size on disk and calculate the sum of all.

For example:
windows - ~8.5 GB
program files -~7GB
MingW -~2.4 MB

..............................

The sum is smaller than 20 GB. But right-clicking Local Disk C I can see free space only 7.5 GB of 48.7 GB. I should have 48.7-20=28.7...Hmm...I think that's a problem.

Should I suspect a malware?

Windows 7 Professional 32 bit

Kenobi - I had a similar problem when I did a clean install of Windows 7 32 bit home premium over Vista. It appeared to consume more disk space than Vista did :-( The oddest thing solved it. I ran Disk Cleanup and scrolled down the list of file types it found. There were still 40 G of Vista files remaining, in addition to the 16 G of Windows 7 files. Checking the box which identified the 40G of files, and clicking cleanup, did the trick.

I know that HDD manufacturer's use one unit of measurement while OS's use another unit of measurement for HDD disk capacity. I expect my "500GB" drive to have about 465 GB of actual free space. Yet Windows, DISKPART, and (3) different hard drive testing software programs all indicate that the...
