    Definitely worth a visit for anyone who hasn't yet been there.

    It looks as if this Fix-It paradigm is being developed and, if so, it could be a great way of hacking a path through the jungle of irrelevant solutions on the Web, a kind of expressway to the specific solution one is looking for. I find that searching for solutions on the Web is very laborious because most of the "hits" that are thrown up are irrelevant however clever one tries to be with the search arguments. For example, if I look for something related to Windows 7 Google throws up masses of stuff from 2004-2007 (before Windows 7 was available) related to Windows server applications and other non-Windows-7 topics. So I restrict the search to stuff 1 year old or less and it still throws up masses of irrelevance. And so on and so forth. So I'm rather pleased at finding this new way of tackling mysterious (to me) Windows 7 problems.

    Uh oh, I spoke too soon.

    Fired up the system this morning and it no longer showed the optical drives in Explorer (although I unchecked the thing in Folder Options about hiding empty drives).

    However, Device Manager recognised the internal optical drive and said it is working properly and I was able to burn a DVD with it using the MS DVD burning software. Having done that the (empty) drive appeared in Explorer.

    The external HP dvd420e dvd writer is not recognised and won't work.

    P.S. After two restarts of the system the internal optical drive reappeared in Explorer and I was able to burn a DVD with it. After 3 subsequent restarts of the system the internal drive is still appearing in Explorer. So the residual problem seems to have mysteriously solved itself. This seems to be normal behaviour in Windows 7. I first installed the system 2 months ago and various bits didn't work but then over the course of hours or days or weeks - depending on the problem - the problems which I had given up on solved themselves without any contribution from me. It's analogous to a neural network which adapts itself. Windows XP was never like this. Hmmm.

    Drive lights up spins, boots but not in device manager anymore


    My DVD drive in my laptop has disappeared. I have followed the trail of websites here and decided to post my experiences. The drive was working fine until about a week ago. The drive does not even appear in device manager, but it will allow me to boot from it. I attempted deleting filters from the registry, I have run mats_dvd all with no luck. I just want to watch my dvds...

    hp laptop have had W7 on it most its life. no problems until a week ago.

    Help! Im having this problem as well. I did so much troubleshooting and research and nothing works.
    All my cd / dvd drives have the exclamation warning but the drivers are up to date.
    Device status says....

    Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

    I did my best to research and apply fixes but none have worked. The drives are still not showing in "My computer". I cant burn CD's or any thing. Please Help. System Restore did not help as well and I turned off driver signing/ integretiy checks. Still no good. Sorry I couldnt screen shot Im not home right now but at work.

    1) Shut down PC.
    2) Physically disconnect the CD/DVD Drive.
    3) Reboot to Windows with NO DVD drive.
    4) Shut down PC.
    5) Physically reconnect the CD/DVD Drive.
    6) Reboot to Windows with DVD drive.
    7) Check Device status.

    Ok I'll Do that when I get home. Seems like the only logocal solution. I did try to use the fix it center and it said that my drives were unassigned so that probably will work. I'll update you when I get home from work. Thank you for your speedy reply.

    I would just like to say thanks for the folks who posted the links to the Fixit tools - the problem posted, with the solution, has done wonders for my credibility in this neighbourhood :).
