    Memory - 6 GB, 12 GB, 18 GB

Question regarding memory that has been asked but I'm not finding the answer I'm looking for yet.

    Software:
    Windows 7 x64 Pro

    Hardware:
    Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7
Memory: Kington HyperX DDR3 Three sticks of 2 GB for 6 GB total. It's 1600 CAS 9.

    My question is:

Can I buy Kingston HyperX DDR3 Three sticks of 4 GB (1600 CAS 9) and put them in slots 2,4,6 and having 18 GB, or is the size difference an issue?

I know you are suppose to have matching pairs (or in this case triples). But does that extend to the other set of triples if the speed and CAS latency are the same?

Usually you can run asynchronous dual and triple channel. Desktop Boards — Single / dual / flex / triple memory modes

Do you really use something that would require 18GB's of RAM?

    Just informational....

I can not answer your question specifically.
but want to say, if you are not setting up numerous Virtual Machines or doing major graphic, video and audio editing and all you are doing is gaming. You do not need more than 4G of ram. You will be wasting your money. You could go 6G of ram, but even that is a small waste.

The place to put your money is a high end processor and graphics card for gaming.
Ram is third on the list. That is if you are only using this for gaming.

Also,,, that mobo according to NewEgg, only supports the following memory

    DDR3 2200/1333/1066/800

that 1600 memory, might down step and only run at 1333 or even 800

It would be really interesting to know what you want to do with all that RAM. Unless you have some extreme applications like CAD, you are already overkilling with 6GBs. I run on 3 and 4GBs and have never seen my RAM actively used at close to 50%. Even for caching it is hard to fill it.
Spend your money on a fast SSD for the OS (60GBs is plenty). That will really give you a performance boost and not be idling like all that RAM. - Just my opinion.

    I completely agree with this.

Uh, no, overkill and waste of money,, depending on the actual applications being used.

Well, his name is CAD, so perhaps there's something he's doing that uses oodles and oodles of RAM?

Yeah, true...at least for now, when everything seems to top out around 4GB. I've been running 6-8GB for a little over a year now, but that's mostly for bragging rights, although it does seem to help when I've got tons of stuff open in PS CS5 x64.

    CS5 with EIZO CG243W monitor. :)
Running next to nothing, I seem to be chewing through about 4 GB of RAM (and that's w/o CS5 running).

The 1600 was what was w/ the system. It probably does downstep to 1333.

    Hardware:
Hard drive: Intel 80 GB SSD.
    CPU: Intel i7 - 775 Extreme

Now that all that has been stated, would someone like to answer the question or is this post just feeding the trolls?

Trolls? Considering these guys are only here to assist, that's not very nice.

    From the link:
Three independent memory channels give two possible modes of interleaving:

    • Triple channel mode is enabled when identical matched memory modules are installed in each of the three memory channels (blue connectors).
    • If only two of the blue memory connectors are populated with matched DIMMs, dual channel memory is enabled.
Desktop Boards — Single / dual / flex / triple memory modes

You may very well end up reverting to dual or single channel with the proposed configuration?

However, as has been stated, and/or implied, if you're using up 4GB's doing nothing, something is amiss.
