Windows 7: keyboard problem

Keyboard, W7Pro

Thanks for your reply. I typed this reply to you 3x with the laptop keyboard and after around 2 paragraphs of words, a keystroke made all text disappear. Dell Gold Tech Support has been on phone with me for over 40 hours. we have reinstalled W7Pro, redone restore 1 step at a time, used W7 Easy Installer 3 times, with and without windows settings, scanned for viruses several times, etc.

In safe mode and on notepad, it's fairly good but still quirky. I also use MS Office 2003 Student and Teacher and tried Open Office to see if Office was the problem.

The only thing that works is an external, usb keyboard.

I'd be really grateful if you know what to do or where I can go for help? Dell is stumped.

It sounds like a stuck key. The reason I wanted a list of what key does what is so I can determine which one, if any is stuck. Ctrl, Alt, Fn, and a couple others cause different stuff to happen when striking different keys.

Might want to get Dell to tell you how to take the keyboard out and put it back in. Sometimes this solves keyboard problems.

Thanks, but it's much more than a stuck key. Have since found very many users at MS having same problems with laptop keyboards, all W7!!

Anything else in common besides using Windows 7?

Dell Gold Tech Support has spent over 40 hours on teh phone with me. They replaced the keyboard and mouse twice, then replaced the system. We did virus scans, registry scans, and countless other routines. It is now clear to me that this is a W7 problem.

It seems to me if it were a Windows 7 problem, a whole lot of us would be having this problem, not just a relatively few folks with certain laptops.

I'm not criticizing you at all nor putting you down. I am simply trying to figure out where the problem lies and what the cause is.

Hey, I appreciate your words and I don't think you're being critical. As I write, I'm on the phone again with Dell Gold Tech Support and they say a few of them are in the lab trying to recreate my problem. Others in the tech support room are "doing research". The Manager of Tech support says he has heard of this exact problem with windows and believes it's a driver issue and a W7 problem. What you say makes sense...

However, I'm all for bashing Dell. Their might be some kind of driver compatibility issue. Does you computer have a driver you installed for the keyboard? Beyond that, I am stumped. I've never heard of anything like this before. Especially if replacing the mother board doesn't fix it. If I were you I would demand Dell give you a new computer of equal or slightly lesser value, or a refund. You shouldn't have to put up with such a ridiculous problem older Vostros don't have with 7. Especially since everything before the 1X20 models aren't considered by Dell to be 7 compatible. Make them give you a Studio 15/17 and be done with it.

Okay, I took a while to write that and see that Dell agrees with me on it being a driver issue. I still think that you should get them to give you a different computer, as yours is barely usable.

I hope this means that Dell is on the road to fixing the driver problem - or I hope you can get a new computer out of it. Do keep us posted.
