Install Vista to upgrade to 7

    Hi

I am getting a nice new SSD (good old Santa) next week and want to do a clean install to start from fresh, the problem I have is that the disk I have is a Windows Pro 64 upgrade which means I have to install Vista before I can install Windows 7 which drives me mad going through the process twice. Is there a way around this or do I have to purchase a new OEM disk?

I think you are right. If you have that disk, you have to install Vista first and then upgrade to 7. Or we can wait for other experts to comment on this.

Installing Vista first & then upgrading to 7 will save you the cost of a new licence or an OEM disc. You can use the 7 upgrade for an installation without installing Vista first but when I did that I had all sorts of problems get it activated by phone. So you may have to end up buying a new licence.

Before you start the the OS installation on your new SSD disconnect all other drives first, otherwise you can have all sorts of problems with the OS going onto the wrong drive.

You are much better off doing both because as the others mentioned; you will likely have less issues etc getting it to upgrade and or licensed.

It is incorrect that one must install Vista first to use Upgrade version of Win7. On a new SSD boot the Win7 installer to do a Clean Install Windows 7 leaving the Product Key blank during install.

Afterwards do the quick Option 3 registry workaround in Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version to allow use of Upgrade version key to activate Win7 Upgrade version on a cleaned or new HD.
