Oem vista, hp upgrade disk, dead motherboard

I got an hp slimline as a present last year for my first year in college, I was introduced to gaming and I've been through upgrading my computer.

Computer came with oem hp vista, later hp sent me a free upgrade to 7. Their disk says it only works on hp computers..

So i installed it, no problem, so I buy a new psu, Case, gpu off newegg and install them, but somewhere in the process I fried my mobo. A friend confirmed this and I just ordered a new asus mobo off newegg.

So I know my os won't work off the hdd, totally dif chipsets. So what are my options here? Can I install it off the hp disk? The computer didn't come with a vista disk, so I can't use that. But than ms offers a 30 dollar generic upgrade disk if you have a student discount, so I could do that if worst comes to worst

I'm assuming this was already out of warranty for tech support and hardware replacement since HP could have done all of this for you otherwise.

Thanks to MS, the Vista-to-Win7 Upgrade kits required manufacturers to provide a clean copy Win7 install DVD rather than a Recovery Disk with factory bloatware. We have helped many clean install the DVD from boot even after wiping Vista from the HD.

And there have been reports that some of the DVD's were used on other computers, even other makes. It has never been made clear if they are OEM media which locks to the mobo once installed, or Upgrade version which is retail and can migrate. I just checked the Acer upgrade I clean installed from Upgrade Kit DVD here and it has no "OEM" in the Product ID string shown on Control Panel>Properties page.

So it is worth a try to reinstall on the new mobo, even make the call to MS to attempt phone activation on the possibility it might be retail Upgrade and allowed to migrate. For OEM locked to mobo, there are periodic reports that MS even makes exceptions for replaced mobos when asked nicely, so that could work in your favor.

Finally, I would even try calling HP tech support as a last resort to ask them if they can help. You can usually get enough information about whether or how some thing is doable that puts you on your way even if you are out of warranty. Be polite and determined.

I tried hp support, whom was little help, told me it was not ok to use it on a new computer. I called twice and both didn't know anything about computers, claiming there was no way I could have altered an hp computer, the second was dedicated to his idea that hdds were soddered to mobos and there was no way I could remove one

than I called ms who were more helpful, but told me they honestly didn't know how hp set up the discs, but gave me a new hp number to try during business hours (5 am here)

I know you can clean install from generic upgrade disks, but I'm fearful of wether hp would lock their upgrade disk to bios or something else screwy
