    Re-instaling XP

I installed Win 7 on an XP notebook that turned out to have a number of incompatibilities. I have since partitioned the drive on my Vista machine and am dual booting and it's working great.

Problem is -- I can't re-install XP on the notebook. Getting and error message telling me it won't let me install an older operating system over the newer one.

    Any suggestions?

Are you booting the XP dvd and doing a clean install?

Yes -- that is what I am trying to do -- it set-up initiates but the "install" option is grayed out.

Not sure this will work, but.... Boot from the 7 dvd and start the install. Choose custom and you should be able to format the drive/partition from there. Then cancel the 7 install, switch to the XP CD/DVD and reboot.

Boot from the 7 disc, delete the partition. Boot from XP disc and install.

Edit: oops just say Gary's post. I think he and I are saying the same thing.

    Fixed

It's all fixed --was able to boot directly from the XP disc and go back to XP.

My notebook rewired F12 to manually boot from the CD.

    Thanks for the tips...

Ok good :P also, if you use a recovery disk set that you can get for free, from mostly HP but others, also then that works even better.
