I have my son today so i wont be able to do anything until tonight. At the moment 2nd black screen during boot with some white text says no drives found then it carries on to boot Vista fine and quicker than ever. When the Win7 drive vanished the pc would only boot with your advice of tap F8 but now vista boots fine after swopping the sata leas on m/board and the Win7 drive is not seen I am learning with your help and am grateful for your advice:)

Helo...i have had a few hectic days clearing out my workshop so i have not touched the pc,i have bought a printer seeing as its 2010 i thought it was time i did.(its still in the box)While i was in the store i took the 1tb drive in to get them to check it was ok,and the bloke said it was partitioned in a strange way? for whatever reason and i didnt pay that much attention to what he was saying because i was to busy with my son (busy/noisy/shop/child/etc) and he formatted the drive for me so i could just start again I hope i get a chance to sort it today but before i do i will get all the information i need from this site because im sure its all there for me to read so i dont have to keep buggin you regards Alan

Hello....would you think i am lazy..(i am tired) if i ask for instructions to set this up again? im gona do it now and swop to older pc for internet.
Should i unplug vista drive etc first then install win7 to the blank 1tb? (i think that would be easiest?quickest install)
Would i really benefit from partition straight after install or should i just make sure its going fine before i partition?
Any ideas what went wrong with original win7 install? i should have paid more attention to bloke in pc store i think it was something to do with the size of the partition it made without me knowing.
I suspect it may be best if i plug new drive in and create a partition to install win7 before i unplug vista drive unless you advise otherwise.
    Many thanks for any advice

To keep me from having to read back through all 5 pages, please go into great detail; do you only want to have Windows 7 installed to the 1TB HDD and no Vista at all?

    OK, here's what to do.

First; disconnect all the HDDs from the motherboard except the 1TB, only leave that one connected.

Then put the Windows 7 disk in the PC and set the BIOS to boot from the ODD first and use this tutorial to over-write everything on the 1TB HDD, it will take about 3 or 4 hours to complete, don't bother it while it does, you'll have a blinking cursor while it works and you'll get a message when it finishes.
When you get to Step Two create a partition to install Windows 7 to as you said earlier you would like to do this, here is how to enter a command to give you a 400GB partition, that should be plenty and you can create other partitions later in Windows 7..

    create partition primary=409600MB <enter>

then finish the rest or that tutorial and then do the clean install of Windows 7 to that partition you created.

Now let me look over what I've written and if there needs to be further info I'll add it in additional posts.

Thanks... the 1tb is blank and is a slave right now,Vista sees it as 930mb so i think the bloke wiped it clean ( he said he formatted it and only took him five minutes or so before he gave it back to me) Maybee im getting adventurous but should i partition it through control panel etc and then unplug the vista drive to install win7 on the 1tb or just follow your instructions?
