RC Upgrade ran better & used less HD than Clean Install

I first did a Vista Premium upgrade to Win 7 RC. Loved it. No conflicts...even XP legacy software ran well (unlike with Vista). Didn't even need compatibility mode. Then I thought I'd try a clean install. Install went smoothly, but than my HP C4280 choked a few times before it installed. I anticipated that. Upgrades tend to "accomodate" pre-existing software, but not so with clean install. That scenario tends to include untested drivers which Win installs by default - fair enough. My legacy apps still run well though. Flash didn't think my OS wasn't compatible and refused to install untill I tricked it into installing at the Adobe Flash test page. Now that the dust has settled - runs great. Even my ESET (NOD 32) security suite runs great. Big question for me is Why does my clean istall use more HD space than the upgrade install. Weird?

My upgrade and clean install both used around 10.6 GB or so. I am not sure why yours were different.
