WET Error "Some of the files might be in use"

I am migrating from XP 32bit to Windows 7 32bit. When I run WET to transfer my XP files to Windows 7, I receive an error for every file. None of them transfer. It tells me that it can't continue until I fix the errors. When I view the errors it tells me that "Some of the files you're transferring might be in use. Close your open files and try again or click skip to continue without these files."

After numerous failed attempts, I click skip to see what happens. It says "Your transfer is complete." Although all the files didn't transfer, the report says successful. The folders are created, but no files are in the folders. It says "Folder Empty."

Help. These are all my files. I need them.

lawdj Welcome to Seven Forums. So where are your files stored? Are they on a external usb drive or are they on a network drive? If perhaps you installed 7 on top of xp then maybe you have a windows old folder in your new install? Can you view the files where they are stored?

I guess I should have been clear. The Windows.old file was deleted by accident. Not by me, but I'm still left with the same set of circumstances.

Well has the recycle bin been emptied? If not then you can restore the windows.old file. You could use some software to try to recover your files after they have been deleted. Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

If windows.old is deleted the only way to transfer them is to try to recover them using a data recovery program like recuva.

Hello lawdj, welcome to Seven Forums!

I'm no help at all but I had an understanding that WET was/is not compatible with Windows XP, can someone confirm or deny this unequivocally for us?

According to this, Microsoft says it is compatible. I however can't confim this because I have not used it. Only because my wife will not let me change her XP box.

Unfortunately, even though Recuva was able to find my files in excellent state, none of them were working. Word files were scrambled and pdf's would open with an error. I just don't know what to do to get WET working properly. Foolish of me to use it in the first place.

Well if you have the files you will need the right program to open them with. You have MS office installed on Win 7 ? And did you install a pdf veiwer after you installed Win 7?
