No no my friend, we are not in disagreement... I only stated the fact that MY HP came with recovery DVD, which states on it that it is for RECOVERY of a failed system, pop it into the DVD drive, start up and sit back whilst it recovers said system back to factory original, no input from you is neccessary... + HP's recovery partition, the partition I promptly deleted !!! and yes, maybe newer systems have a different method of recovery... I was unfortunate in the fact that I purchased my HP by credit card on the web, and a friend who was visiting China brought it out to me.... unfortunate in the fact that the power supply went 'tits-up' after 6 months, when I took it to an HP agent in Chengdu, they couldn't locate a similar power pack.. HP had NO such part number in their database of spares... I could get MANY smaller ones, less amps, same power, etc: In frustration, I tracked down the Chinese maker of the power pack, and they very kindly, and VERY cheaply gave me an identical replacement, with the HP part numbers on, that HP said didn't exist !!!!! Latterly, I sold that on, ans swore NEVER to give HP ONE more cent.. Ha haaaa, the HP agent even tried to charge me 900Yuan for actually LOOKING through the database... can you image what I told him ( in Chinese, of course...)

Yeah, I know what you are talking about. I have two HP's, both purchased in the US. I had several problems with their support (coming out of India for the US customers). I then took the habit of going directly to their corporate office in the US where I was given what they call a "case manager". At least those guys have some muscle and can get things done.
On my HP laptop the battery died too. But I was able to get a replacement from this company ( Hewlett Packard 12 cell 8800 mAh (EV089AA, EX940AA EV088AA, 432306-001) Battery - HP Laptop Battery ) for a lot less money than the HP price.
I never had similar problems with my Gateway or Dell. Their support is pretty good. The Dell I bought in Germany and their support comes out of the eastern European countries (Poland and Slowakia). I guess that is cheaper for them because the cost of labor in Germany is sky high.

It is interesting how different experience we have. I am a sworn HP user because of the good quality of the products, excellent customer service (sales and service) and the easiness in everything. Been that over 10 years now.

At the moment we have at home 3 HP laptops, a HP HTPC and a HP desktop plus one HP Laserjet printer and one HP Photosmart printer/scanner. At work 6 HP desktops and/or workstations, 6 HP laptops, 2 HP Laserjets and 2 HP Photosmart printer/scanners.

Never an unsolved problem, never a promise HP didn't keep, never a problem with service or spare part or warranty and guarantee.

    Funny.

Kari, you are lucky. Maybe the German HP support is better than the support in the US. I never tried the support in Germany because my HP's are in the US. But don't you have to pay for support in Germany from day 1 whilst it is free for 1 year in the US. Maybe that makes a difference.
