How to automate user preferences?

After doing a basic install of Win7, patch etc, I would like to be able to automate many post-install setup options/preferences and i'm wondering what the best approach to this would be.

For example, adding specific toolbars, resizing toolbar and buttons, folder options, etc... all the little things we tweak after we get our system setup.

The only thing that comes to mind now is to watch the registry with some software and see where the changes i make get recorded, my fear is that not all of them may be stored there...

Try Windows Easy Transfer. It's built in.
1) click Start
2) type "tr"
3) select Windows Easy Transfer
4) select 3rd option
5) select this is my old computer
6) select only your user account
7) click customize link
8) select only Windows settings (and program settings if you want those too)
9) click advanced
10) clear the checkboxes
11) click next
12) type password
13) select the save location of your .MIG file -- it will save the settings to a file you probably want to use a flash drive
14) rebuild your box
15) run Windows Easy Transfer again -- you should be able to figure it out from there

Do the community here a favor and write this up as a tutorial if it works for you as I've been strapped for time recently and always meant to do it!

If you don't plan to go to other machines, set up your machine, get it configured and take an image. Then, rather than reinstall the OS, just lay back down the image.

I've been doing imaging of base installs and base configs but this is for various PC's. I'll try ET and let you know if that's what i'm looking for.

OK, ET is not what i'm looking for; I need an option with a lot more fine tuning and control - I'm thinking of scripting.

Just to give you an example of some things i'd like to control - task bar size and layout, additional toolbars, file view options, etc etc.

So far my only idea is to search for individual registry settings for each item and i still haven't figured out the best way to go about it...

Can I get UAC to remember user preferences?
Hi. Is there any way to stop UAC asking the same question ("do you want this software to make changes to your PC", or whatever the text is) over and over again for programmes I run many times a day. Surely there must be a way to tell UAC that a certain programme is safe and that I don't want to be...

Way to automate USB close down?
Windows 7 RC1 7100 I'm looking for an easier way to close down six USB devices (USB external backup hard drives) than closing them one at a time in the little 'open devices' menu. Is there a utility or setting to automate the process when logging off or shutting down? Thanks for your help -...
