windows 7, installing on fresh cpu

Welp, not sure what I did but i reran the Xp installation and its working now. At least its formatted the hard drive and is now installing the xp files so I figure if I get xp up and running i'll try to install 7 over it and see if that works.

Just a hunch but if XP works fine, I get the feeling the drivers are just not Windows 7 compatible. Like I said, I used XP drivers for my raid on 7 just fine but maybe your combination or drivers/hardware just doesn't work.

Xp installed fine and I managed to install windows 7 over it and its running. I have a Seagate 1TB hard drive and its only recognizing 811 GB, I know there is some loss associated with every hard drive but I figured 189 GB is pretty significant so I'm running a disk check on it now.

It might have made the boot partition. I think it uses 100 megs for that.

I have almost the same setup coming in the mail this week. Same mobo and Q8200 CPU. I am nervous about my first "real" build. I have replaced most parts but never the mobo. I hope I can depend on the people here for help if I run into problems. I will want to install the 7 RC on it until the RTM comes out. I don't have a copy of XP to install 7 over......I hope it works.

I really dont think this is a driver issue. for one thing, I have that exact same hard drive, and was able to fresh install win7 just fine on it.

Win7's in box drivers do include that of your perticular HD.

setting that aside, try a couple things... replace your SATA cable with a different one, and plug it into a different port. Retry installation.

Also, if you have another drive laying around, try installing to that one, see if it sticks.

Thirdly, try to install onto a different Hard Drive altogether. If that works, try a different MB, and that perticular 1TB HD. Just to see if it sees it at the beginning of install.

The above will tell us which is the faulty component, however this is assuming that this is a hardware malifunction.

To rule out software, try the USB install method, if not, then try to locate a DVD-RW, they have a huge advantage for data-retention than their DVD-R counterparts.

Let us know how the above goes.

I take out the windows 7 cd, put in the cd that came with the hard drive assuming the files should be on there but it says the required files aren't on the disk. I tried also putting in the motherboard CD but it also says the required files aren't on that disk either. My hard drive is connected through a SATA port, I only have one hard drive and when the SATA RAID/AHCI controller is off it detects my hard drive and my CD rom drive in the BIOS but if I change it to RAID mode it doesn't detect either of them.

Do I need to make a floppy disk or something with the RAID drivers? Where would I get those at and can I use a USB since I don't have a floppy drive?
Why are you trying to use raid setting for one drive?
