Xp and Seven - No Boot Menu for OS selection

    hi there,

I have succesfully partitioned my drive with windows 7 on my one partition and windows xp on my second partition, I have third partition for media files.

My 2 operating systems have been setup fine, the only problem is when I startup my machine it goes straight into XP...its not showing the boot manager.

I want it to go straight to seven...please can you help?

    thanks

BY default it should happen but in your case it doesn't so next time when u log in to xp, right click ur computer icon and select properties and then in advanced tab click startup and recovery....
Change the Default OS from there and give some time to list the operating systems if u want....

    see picture for better understanding...

If the above doesn't work, download either OSL2000 or Easybcd to
    correct your boot manager.

    Hi martythomas,

It depends how you did the installations.

It would help to post screenshots of Disk Management, like this :

    and bcdedit, like this:

Open an elevated command prompt ( in the Start search box type cmd, then right click on cmd (at top), and click on Run as administrator), type :

    bcdedit {enter}

and post the contents of the cmd window.

Hi and thanks for the help.

    Here is an update:

I installed win 7, then installed xp, then was not able to access win 7 as I was booting straight into xp.

I purchased Vistabootpro as recommended via the instructions in what I was following: install-windows-xp-in-dual-boot-with-pre-installed-windows-7-t104890.html

I followed the instructions, it found win 7, but seems to have not found win xp - strange. It just shows win 7 and "Windows Recovery environment"

I have win 7 on my c: and win xp on my d:

When booting, I would like to know how I can specify to xp when I need to, with win 7 being my primary OS..

    A screenshot of my partitions:

Disk 0 being my primary HD that has my OS:

    c: win 7
    d: win xp

all i want to do is be able to get into xp now...have the best of both worlds and freely reboot and select which OS I want...even if it automatically goes into seven I want to be able to get into xp somehow...think I am missing something here..

Thanks for the help, it is appreciated!

Easybcd will work fine in 7.

Try adding the entry for XP - select the partition the XP bootfiles are on - not necessarily the same as the partition as XP main o/s files are on.

In your case, it looks like XP bootfiles are on C.

Ok - I followed those instructions, when I select "type" and windows nt/2k/xp/2k3 it grays out the drive below...leaving it at c:..

so I followed the rest of the tutorial, rebooted, got the menu, selected XP and got an error saying something about couldnt find boot.ini or something like that..then restarted the system and I was back at square one..

    what can I do now?
