    Toshiba Satellite 5105-S501

I have a Toshiba Satellite 5105-S501 (AKA 5100-503 in Europe apparently) and am replacing the HDD for a client after a hard crash.

The unit is an older model that shipped with Windows XP.

Toshiba download site lists only XP/2000 drivers but given its age that is no surprise.

Has anyone attempted to install Windows 7 on this model?

    TIA!

If you google the model number + Install Win7 it isn't very encouraging.

You may have to insert the IDE controller driver if prompted so it will detect HD and install. From there it may take workarounds and coaxing, or it may install straightaway for you to test drive it to see how performance pans out.

I enjoy the challenge to make these things work. I don't know if you have the time or patience.

We're here to help if you need it.

Yeah I did quite a bit of googling on it and as you said it was not very encouraging. I was hoping, by some slim chance, another user had already tried W7 on this model series.

The new drive should arrive soon and I will give it a whirl. I am blessed/cursed with plenty of spare time right now....

But if push comes to shove I will slap XP on it and let it ride...

If it flat out won't install there are some troubleshooting steps we can go through which you'll also find in many of these threads here in Install forum. Test your hardware, update BIOS, create partition, mark Active, etc.

If it still won't install then I'd try it one last time run from XP as it may enable install of Win7.
