    formatting

Hi, If I format my toshiba laptop and re install windows 7, will it work without all the toshiba stuff that comes with it when purchased. I have a corrupt registry that recovery will not fix. The problem is in start up. I have ordered a windows 7 full version disc to try and repair but want to know if I can format.

You should try the start up repair from the CD first but your machine should run better without all the bloatware that came with it. In fact you should be better off in the long run with a clean install without all the toshiba software and preinstalled bloatware.

Formatting should work for you but it's sometimes better to get the all the required drivers before hand and put them on a CD or DVD.

If this laptop came with Windows 7 installed most every driver will install automatically after you reformat.

Hello debdedoos, welcome to Seven Forums!

If there is nothing on the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) of the PC you need to save and you want the best possible space to install Windows to, have a look at this tutorial at the link below; be sure to post back with any further questions and to keep us informed.

Windows 7 is pretty much driver complete, after install look in device manager to see if there are any drivers that need updated, most, if not all will be available through Windows Update.
       Information

After you have made backups of everything you care to save and you want to do a real wipe "secure erase" to the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) have a look at this tutorial at the link below, it over-writes everything, all the old Windows code including the old Windows drivers, everything all data, giving you the best possible space to install Windows 7 to; it goes hand-in-hand with a clean install.

If you format your drive and install a fresh copy of Windows (not the copy that came with your PC) then you will lose all the "bloatware" but yes, it will run fine; probably better even.

Hi, Unfortunately the computer wouldn't even boot up to the windows 7 disc. I installed a new hard drive and have re installed windows but there are a couple of drivers missing. I think the other hard drive got a huge virus through it. Don't know how it got through though cos we are running trend micro. The PCI simple communications driver is missing and windows can't find it when it searches on the web.

Are you're positive you have the PC BIOS set to boot first from the CD-ROM drive and not the HDD?

Yep, I changed the boot order to boot to the cd/dvd drive, it said it was installing files and kept coming up with a message that there was a corrupt registry problem with the start up. I did the toshiba recovery discs and the boot disc and it would read them but would still not start up.

    Hello again.

Have a look at Option Three to see if you can boot to and use the Partition Wizard boot disk to wipe the Hard Disk drive (HDD) so that you can do the install.

Check optional Windows Updates for newer drivers, then the Toshiba Support Downloads webpage for your model for any still missing in Device Manager.

Install updates and then programs slowly over time to gauge performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets. https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...-msconfig.html

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly.

Then save a Win7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD or replacement using DVD or Repair CD. Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

You could have wiped the original HD with zeros using the tutorial Barefoot posted earlier to Optimize for reinstall. That overwrites any infected code. You can still do so, but unplug your new HD first and boot from DVD.
