Windows 7 64-bit OEM Version

Hi,

I have never upgraded a OS before. In the past I just went from one Desktop-PC to another but this time I quite like the specs of my machine and I don't want to go through the hassle of buying a Desktop-PC again. So anyway, my current machine has a Windows XP SP3 OEM operating system and I just bought a Windows 7 64-Bit OEM operating system. My question is, am I able to format my PC and get rid of that Windows XP OEM version and replace it with the Windows 7 64-bit OEM version?

And if I can do that, what will happen to my Windows XP OEM version? Will I be able to use it on a different desktop?

Yes you will be able to do a format and install, here's a couple tutorials...

As for your XP, it is tied to that machine so it cannot be used on another one.

Thanks for the super quick reply. I just wasn't sure if the XP had locked onto my pc and therefore not let me install Windows 7 OEM version. It's sad that i'll lose that XP but at least I'll get the Windows 7 upgrade.

Well the thing is that I don't want to open the Windows 7 64-bit OEM box to try to install it but only to find out that I can't. Cause then I can't get a refund.

And now when I think about it I really should have researched this properly before I went ahead and bought it.

Hi Ashley and welcome

OEM only works on that machine (or an identical one).

Yes you can format XP and install win 7 but have you run the upgrade adviser to make sure it will run win 7?

No you probably cant use the xp OEM on another machine and besides support for XP will be stopping soon so no newer drivers etc will become available.

No I haven't done the Upgrade Adviser. I might do that now before I try installing windows 7.

To see if windows 7 will run on your computer before you open the package.
