Disk management Snip for Barefoot Kid:

Ive now re-labeled the drives from disk management (as you can see)

Greg: my experience with CC cleaner in Vista was nothing but flawless.
What AV and Malware do you guys use? Ive heard the Microsoft AV is good?

Suggest MS Security Essentials with Windows Firewall.

Installs to become invisible with no impact on performance.

Do you want to set up a separate Data partition to feed both Vista and Win7 in that space? User Folders - Change Default Location

Makes the image a lot leaner. If Win7 becomes irreparable you only need to reimage the OS/Programs partition and data is current and waiting in its vault. Back it up anyway zipped to external.

Oh that fourth partition, unless you want Extended/logicals, have a look at Step Four of this tutorial at the link below.

    Got Vista booting yet?

    Icarus,
    Another vote for MSE.

Excellent choice of Wein. The grape/vineyard/label? My youngest has strong ties to South Africa.

    Greg:
I do definately want to set up a seperate data vault thing. The concept was one of the things that really attracted me to W7. I will have a look at your link.

Re firewall and MSE. MSE sounds great.. Will go find it. i already have a hardware router. Do I still need the windows firewall? Dont they do the same thing?

Barefoot Kid: Yup. Just did easyBCD and Vista now booting as a choice from the menu. Now I need to sort out the unallocated space - will follow your tut.

You absolutely need the Win7 firewall to which all of the security Updates are applied. It is the best ever with no impact whatsoever on performance.

You can even turn off the hardware firewall, which I never did pre-Win7.

You'll need to switch to Macrium Reflect or Paragon Backup 10 free editions to gain the flexibility to reimage just the OS partition. But you really need that anyway, until Win7 imaging app evolves.

    Greg,
You can reimage only the OS partition with Win 7 Backup and Restore. That's my preferred approach since I use SyncToy to backup and sync between computers my libraries, data files, etc.

Greg: Well windows firewall is running (becasue I havent turned it off).
Also - Macrium Reflect is the partition imager Im using. Works a treat.

karl: ive noticed a lot of people using synchtoy. Does it do a different job that me putting the user data in a datavault on another drive/partition?

Simplifies the backup job. Offers backup options. I keep my SyncToy backups on a usb drive, since I do not have networked computers and need to keep certain files in sync between computers.

    Here's the link:
    SyncToy 2.1

The explanation there is much more detailed and complete.

Is there a performance hit using SyncToy to keep files synched from data partition to external? Anything noticeable at all? Just askin.

I won't use Backup managers which change the file structure in any way so synch is the way I want to go.

Can you invoke it just by plugging external when you want?

What about the MS synch application?
