    manually edit xp's boot.ini file to select win 7

    i was dual booting win7 and xp and then i formatted my xp partition,installed a fresh copy of xp and now it automatically loads windows xp, it doesn't show where i use to select the OS to load

    my disk is partitioned c drive for win7 and d drive for win xp

    this is the contents of my xp's boot.ini file:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    how do i manually add win7 to the boot.ini file of win xp so i can select win7 to boot?

    It needs to be done the other way round.

    You need to reinstate Win7 boofiles, then add the (XP) ntldr to Win 7 bcd.

    See step 7 onward of this tutorial:

    Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP

    Hope it helps

    Hi I have a similar problem, but it occurred in a differnet way.

    I had XP installed on one disk, with another disk for data.

    I then wiped the other disk, disconnected the xp disk and installed 7 on the now empty disk.

    If I connect back up the XP disk, it always boots into XP, unless I go into the bootload screen for my MOBO, and select the 7 disk to boot from.

    How can I get the bootload screen options in this case please?

    Thanks
