"(assuming you are using SATA drives and the controller is configured to run in SATA mode),

mcp_764_mb\WIN764\IDE\Win764\sata_ide

that should get the necessary driver installed, and then allow Windows to see the hard drive."

regarding this, I have a Western Digital caviar 500gb drive but how do I know that my controller is configured to run in SATA mode?

Enter BIOS setup to check SATA controller setting.

What are the options given?

It says:
IDE Primary Master [Not Detected]
IDE Primary Slave [Not Detected]
SATA1 [Not Detected]
SATA2 [Not Detected]
SATA3 [Not Detected]
SATA4 [WDC WD5000AAKS]
Perhaps my HDD should be primary master?

@gregorrocker ON-chip SATA controller is set on Enabled
The options are Disabled/Enabled.

Not primary master, that is for IDE connections only. Probably should have the hard drive connected to SATA1. It shouldn't make a difference, but to rule out that is or isn't it worth a shot

If you lack BIOS SATA controller settings (AHCI, SATA, IDE mode, etc) then use the SATA controller drivers from chipset which Stormy identified for you.

Partiall success! I did as stormy13 told me and when it before gave me the error it now found one driver called NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller
But then when i press next I get an error saying
"No new devices could be found. Make sure the driver files are correct and located on the driver installation media." You guys are being great btw

From looking at the specs again for that board it also supports RAID, and from looking at the severe lack of useful information in the manual for it (MSI must be slipping as I have seen more info on a box of toothpicks), it may also take the RAID driver as well.

Try again only this time point it to both the sata_ide folder and the sata_raid folder.

Thanks once again stormy and yes i agree with you i have the manual here and i didnt understand much but i just thought i was dumb lol
Btw in BIOS there is a RAID mode with the options RAID and IDE (now set at IDE)
Maybe should be set at RAID?
when i point windows at sataraid it loads nicely without giving me an error (other faulty folders give you an error saying that there's nothing there), but no driver shows up. It just loads and then nothing. If you loaded sata_ide before it it clears the Nvidia nForce controller that it found and loads leaving the list of drivers empty again.
