Windows 7: re-install windows 7

Can't install Windows 7 after infection

I have a friends Dell Inspiron 1110 and after getting infected it got into a looped reboot not even getting to the windows bootup.

I am somewhat savvy at this and have done many clean installs but this one is particularly tricky.

I have since wiped the hard drive and tried to install win 7 fresh by an external cd drive since this netbook has none and also tried the usb method as well. Both ways get to expanding the files but will not complete but says some of the files may be missing and some other various messages. I have two different iso images and have since tried all of them and have used them in the past so I know they work.

I have also installed Ubuntu and this works. It will boot into it and run perfectly. I am currently trying to write zeros to it via ultimate boot disc and command prompt then I will try installing windows again.

I know some viruses can flash the bios but would I still be able to install Ubuntu if it did corrupt the bios?

Thanks for any help in advance. This has been a very tough problem and the owner is going back to college soon.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS version update. If so, reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Where did you get Win7? How do you plan to activate? Check the HASH against official HASH using Hashtab: Windows 7 RTM SHA-1 hash / checksums

Then boot the DVD, wipe the HD again using Diskpart and Custom install. SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

If you are installing from an .iso file, it sounds like there is a problem with the .iso not being genuine. Buy the Windows 7 product and install it that way. You will not have a problem then.

Ok, I found out my answer. Must have had a brain fart. The netbook would only accept 64 bit. I've never ran across a 64 bit system that you couldn't install 32 bit on and forgot that this one had 64 bit installed. Solved!

Borrow any Win7 Installer from a friend, unlock all versions to burn to DVD or write to flash stick and install your licensed version. Clean Install Windows 7

If you download from the web, make sure you check comments, rightclick scan with your AV and Malwarebytes, and check the HASH if there is any question: Windows 7 RTM SHA-1 hash / checksums

We are not allowed to link to Win7 downloads as it is thought to encourage piracy.

I would do a search for legal windows 7 downloads.
