Please Offer Advice on Installation

    Thanks Gary, so then do I only need to partition about 20gb then for the installation? Since I will continue using my original C drive for installing new programs and downloading new files, so I'd like to leave as much room on there as I could. Anyways, it looks like this installation may actually happen (aiming for tomorrow), the download is 85% complete! I'm still hoping someone can address the "what to do if the installation goes bad" aspect of my original post. Although by the sounds of it, since I'm not replacing Vista, I can just boot up in Vista if Windows 7 is crashing or does not install correctly? And I don't have to worry about my files getting erased either?

    Yes, you will have to reinstall all your programs that require installing. Installation makes all of the registry entries required for the software to run.

    If the installation goes bad you will be able to boot into Vista as usual. In that event come back here and we'll help you remove the boot entry and start over or whatever you like. Shouldn't be any problems though, so long as your getting the RC from Microsoft and not a torrent.

    id advise 30-40gb+ for it, just to allow for programs and such.

    Ah ok, thanks! So my files will be kept but my programs must be reinstalled. No big deal. Although I will have to re-download (legally) the 6gb installation file for Adobe Creative Suite! Ahh! And MS Office too for that matter But ok I decided I will partition off 40gb, now I'm just waiting for the Windows Backup to finish moving my stuff to my external first (it's taking hours and isn't even half done!) because I feel like it's probably not a good idea to do the partition while it's trying to copy all my files over. I think I'm going to go ahead and install W7 once that is done though, so hopefully my computer doesnt freak out!

    Oh, and I guess one last thing before I do install.. It says on the Windows website that to install you need to know how to set up a server. What exactly does this entail that I do?

    nothing, if youve every installed an OS before, its pretty much the same, server is only if you intned to run it on a server.
