Seven boot problems after partition resizing

I installed windows seven beta a few weeks ago. I made the partition too small at the time and just recently used a live ubuntu cd's partition editor to add more space to the windows seven partition.

When I booted into vista it automatically check the drive and restarted with no problems.

When I attempted to boot into seven it gave me an error screen saying I need to reinstall my O.S.

I have lost my cd for the beta build. Is their anyway I could get a copy of the iso from Microsoft again? Or would it be easier to upgrade to the release candidate? Or can I posiblely repair without the cd (when I try to acess the extra features of f8 on the boot screen I get the same error as trying to load the os)?

    What error do you get?

In Vista , rt click the 7 partition and run check disk.

Also, have a look in Disk Management and see if the 7 partition shows up correctly.

If it does, may be able to fix it using bcdedit in Vista.

Partition your drive as FEW TIMES AS POSSIBLE!

you will hit many problems if you try to partition this multiple times. your best bet would be to cut it in half, or thirds. Win7 is huge, and needs room to breath. Completely wipe your current Win7 install, and set partitions as above, then re-install to a blank partition at LEAST 30+GB. Although I personally can't work with less than 50GB on anything, especially if you want to upgrade to new builds later on.

as for getting another copy of Win7, you should be able to torrent it... I dont know if M$ still offers it free...

The message on boot states "windows failed to load. A recent hardware or software change may be the cause."

    The status is "Oxc000000f".

The description is "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."

I used the bcdedit to change the value of 'device' under the windows seven column from "unknown" to "partition=F:". The same error still appeared.

The problem I believe I'm having right now is the partition might be name differently in seven. How would I go about checking to see what Seven believes the partition name is.

I did more research and narrowed the problem down to one likely cause. Windows Seven still thinks the partition are the old way, I went through regedit and changed the values for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices drives in seven to the values vista had for them. That still did not work, so unless anyone has more advice I goint to get a copy repair my seven installation.

A breif question regarding repairing seven. If I upgrade to the relase canadite will it save install over the current installation and keep my files or do I have to use the beta to repair the current instalation?

    Hi,

If you want to use the System Recovery options on the dvd to do a startup repair - the RC should be fine to use.

If you want to install the RC, as long as you do not repartition during installation - just click on the partition you want to install to - you should get the option to save the existing contents into a folder called Windows.old.
