win 7 on ssd for speed - how do I raid 10 my 4 2tb hdd excluding ssd

    Hi,
I have a 64gb SSD with win 7 32 installed. I also have 4 x 2tb hdd which I wish to set up as raid 10. I can not find a way of raiding the 4 hdd but excluding the sdd with the OS on. My m/b is Asus m4a89gtd pro/usb3 and my intent was to use the on board raid controller. Any guidance much appreciated.

What do you hope to accomplish using RAID10? It is dated technology now that Windows has built-in drive imaging unless you expect a performance boost, but your SSD will provide you with that.

Most of what we see here are Win7 install failures due to RAID. It would be nice to understand the ongoing benefits of RAID even without the OS involved.

there should be a key combination to press during startup, to access the RAID setup utility. on my asus motherboard its CTRL-F10.

    solved -

OK. By trusting to logic (and carefully re-reading the Asus MB docs) i managed to resolve the problem. Essentially the solution boils down to being able to set 2 of the onboard sata controllers to IDE (5 and 6) after the global setting of RAID. So having switched the OS containing SSD to Sata 5 I was able to boot into Win 7 following the raid 10 BIOS setup.

I want this PC to dualboot to Ubuntu so my expectaion is that the Raid array can be seen in both OS's.

    Regards for your responses.

i would suggest you wait for an answer from greg, but i dont think the RAID drive would be usable by both operating systems (but i've never used RAID10)
