Can you see the HD to initialize it in another OS's Disk Mgmt?

If not, plug it into SATA 1 port and unplug all other HD's for install.

Boot the Win7 DVD to see if it detects the HD, then install.

    Thanks gregrocker.

Guess I should have said- I can not see the drive in w7 or the bios. not seeing it at all, is not necessarily uncommon, from what I read.

Um, I am not sure where to look or what to change in w7. I am not sure it is showing in device man or not, again not uncommon. I have read some place it might show in ide/ata/atapi controllers and might be listed as 1 or 0 and you have to format it then it just shows up. I am not sure it will ever show in my bios tho.

    I added this screen shot..>

It is odd I can not see it at all in my bios, makes me think the drive is bad.. I have another new 1 just like it here, I am thinking of trying. I will try your way first tho. See If I can install w7.

It w7 is upgrade. I do not know that it will let me install it on a new drive, and no windows installed hdd found, if I disconnect my sataII drive it has the os on it.

Will it hurt the sataIII drive to run it in sata1 sataII connection?? I thought of that, I was not sure it would hurt the drive. I have white sata 6gig cables, I do not know if they are different or just have sata 6gig on them just as advertisement or something? All sata cables look the same to me..

Thanks for your help, I am grateful..

    K

I just read here. Wires should not matter and sataIII is back compatible to sataII. I will connect it like you said. Give that a try. I will turn on all AHCI support in my bios before trying to install w7.

Serial ATA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I guess if it lets me install w7. After I get drivers installed and if I did it right and have AHCI support. I guess I can change the drive from sata1 and put it on sata7 and should run at its full sataIII speeds. Ya I wish it was a ssd.

If all of that works, I guess I can hook up my sataII I am using now, back on sata1. Make sure boot order is my new sataIII drive first boot. Get into windows and reformat my sataII drive and make it for storage.

All hardware I am using is in my specs.

    Thanks again gregrocker.

I figured it out, well mostly. I did it like you said.

I disconnected my sataII with os on it. And connected my sataIII to sata1 connector after setting AHCI support in bios. W7 disc fired right up, installed w7 on it. Ya I see black screen saying- cpu ahci during boot, and have ahci support in windows. I was not sure if the drive worked or not. I have another setting here. I tried the other way first, put it on sata1.

But I guess or hope to move my sataIII to sata7, and hook up my sataII to sata1 connector, and reformat my sataII for data storage. I am not sure how w7 will act. I might have to use wd tools and delete it in dos or something. Maybe just making sure the boot order is right will skip it, and then I can reformat it in windows. Its just I am not sure the drive will show up on sata7 connector. I am not certain how that works or if I have other drivers to install. It shows up now as a normal ahci drive on sata1. I do not know what it will do on sata7? I will find out .

W7 upgrade would not let me register it. I will figure that out. I am still not sure about all the drivers. I installed the marvell tray. I do not think I need it. I think the download page has same drivers a few times or something. I am not sure I need intel matrix. I did install marvell sata3- jmicron- usb3 and sound video etc. It is a driver I got from my download page, says intel p55 ahci raid drivers. I look in the file it says it is intel matrix storage. But I have another driver that is name intel matrix storage.

** My mobos page where drivers etc are..>

MSI Global – Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more

If I use msi live update4 it gives me 2 different lan drivers. I am not sure what to get. I used windows for the lan drivers- I installed everything else from my disc I burned, or from off of the disc the marvel sata6, I think it gave me this tray thingy . See that is part of the problem. So many drivers and some multi same, or just worded different maybe. Being new to this rig, I do not know right from wrong.

It is working me. I am figuring it all out. Gees.

I need a nap. I will mess with it more laters..

    Thanks, see ya..

Why do you want to move the new HD now that Win7 has installed on SATA1 port? I would leave it.

Are the other HD's recognized by Win7 now?

Win7 installer is mostly driver-complete with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. I would not change any drivers unless there are performance reasons, only import drivers which are missing in Device Manager after optional Updates are done.

Here are tips for getting a purrrfect install based on hundreds done here: re-install windows 7

If you installed Upgrade version to new HD, you'll need to do one of the workarounds given here: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version Easiest is the Registry edit. Then activate at Computer>Properties activation link.

    Thanks.

Well. My SataIII 6g/s drive only runs at 6g/s on sata 7-8 If I understand right.

Right now, The sata III is the only drive hooked up. I need to hook up my sata II drive and nuke the os on it so I can make it my data storage drive.

I am almost certain I need to move my sata III from sata 1 to sata 7 for it to run at its full speeds. Tho folks say it might not be faster than sata II. It should be or can be faster but only on a sata III connector on the mobo.

sata 1-6 is on chip p55- 7-8 has its own controller and I think sata 9 has its own controller, drivers etc..

Ok ya, I normally let w7 install somethings, like realtek audio if newer drivers or the lan. It is, I am new to this mobo and w7- never used vista- I came straight from xp pro. Not really sure what is needed etc. I have another system just like this to build for my bud, after I get this one set up right. His will be a breeze to build and set up..

And ya. I do check and make sure I install anything in yellow not installed in device management. But I read most all the w7 drivers are basic. Most of the drivers with product are better unless out dated and more new can be found on the product site etc.

I have read w7 ahci drivers are poor. It is best to install the ones with your mobo etc. I am not sure which are the exact drivers tho..

Ya. I need to register w7. I did not know. Maybe I can talk to microsoft and explain what I did and why and needed ahci support , It is not my fault really. I do not plan to dual boot or run more than 1 legit copy. I just need it registered and reformat my other drive.

I will figure it out.. You helped me get this far..

    Thanks a lot gregrocker.

    Oh ya

Thanks for that clean install link. I will read more on it, looks cool tho. I like how you can do the 100mb partition and put your back up copy there etc..

So. What about reformats every year or 2. How the heck are we supposed to do that and register too. I guess it is fine as long as showing registered copy and using same set up- either ide or ahci or raid.. Trying to change either of them puts w7 into fits it seems.

It is kind of stupid I think. Vista had native ahci support w7 does not. And w7 is causing millions of folks problems trying to install the ahci support properly.

MS spent a fortune building drivers for Win7 so that manufacturers couldn't hold out to force us to buy newer hardware as they did with Vista. Under the WHQL program, these manufacturers were even paid to build newer drivers so that Win7 would have them in the installer, or newer ones quickly available via Windows Updates.

I have heard no other complaints to date of Win7 AHCI support. If you have performance problems then try your chipset drivers which should include AHCI.

This is only one way that Win7 has evolved beyond XP. The old methods and tools are XPired. For example tweaking beyond normal system settings will almost always come back to bite you in Win7, which is already as lean and optimized as it can be. All Services not needed at Startup are set on Manual fast triggers developed for Win7.

Certainly move your HD if you have a faster port for it. It shouldn't matter as long as you make sure Win7 HD is set first to boot in BIOS setup. We tend to favor SATA1 here since during Repair the System MBR can be derailed to another partition if it is marked Active and precedes Win7 partition.

Reinstalls are really not necessary any longer with Win7 built-in Drive Imaging. Just save a baseline image from after install and setup when it is running best and you can reimage the HD or a replacement in 20 minutes. I keep a more recent image as well, in separate folders since it needs to be in the root to be detected by DVD/Repair CD.
Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup
    System Image Recovery

However if you boot the Install DVD to clean reinstall, it scans the HD to detect any OS to allow Upgrade version key upfront. You only need to do the workaround if you wipe the HD or have a new HD since the DVD cannot see another OS.

    Cool

You have helped me a lot man. Nice about it too. Fast replay.

Trying to get help some places and I do not type well or type too much or bad grammar. That is all others can talk about. Snob and put us stupid folks down and never try and help us.

I build my own systems , but only every few years come upgrade time. W7 and this new intel system is new to me. So It is not the most easy and my msi manual is lacking too..

It is nice to get helped.. Thank you very much..
