Hi Tilly2010, hate to say it but sounds like your copy isn’t legitimate. Definitely call Microsoft and see what they have to say though.

Good luck

Hello Tilly2010, welcome to Seven Forums!

You can give the info below a go to see if you're able to get back to the factory condition of the lappy when first purchased and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

information   Information

HP Recovery Center

Be advised that this will take the machine back to the point when you first took it of the box.

The "HP Recovery Center" will give you the option to send to backup anything you
don't want to lose, so have backup media available to use if you choose this option.

With the machine off press the power button, as soon as you do that start tapping the F11 key.

It may take several attempts to do this, if the first attempt fails, try again.
That should take you to the HP Recovery Center. When there just follow the prompts.

It is pretty much self explanatory. From the time you boot into F11 (not counting
any backups you choose to make) you should be back on a working desktop in about
30 minutes. After it restarts just follow the prompts again to finish the process.

If your first option is system restore select no, which should take you to system recovery.

You want to try system recovery not system restore, unless you have good restore points!

While I agree that doing a system restore may get the machine back to a factory working condition, It does nothing to counter the fact that it's been flagged as "fake", and the next updates will result in the same problem. Now we argue that he can turn updates off but....

Bottom line is he needs to deal with the issue of its authenticity.

My two cents

Again, call MS Customer Service to check the Product Key and Product ID number. They will confirm if it is good or not.

If so, then they should open a tech Support case to get it activated by whatever means necessary.

If not, their certification that it is not a legit Product Key gives you something definite to take to Amazon Customer Service which proves they are selling bogus goods.

thanks for all the replies....... been following advice one by one! have tried the F8 and F11 commands and they are not active (keeps asking for admin passwords and there are none set and no place to type them anyway). Tried telephoning Microsoft but the only numbers we have are either not active or when you press numbers for directions on their system, you are cut off. Eventually we found a number for MSN and I called them and was told that the errors I am receiving sounded as if the software was counterfeit and I needed an engineer with the necessary software to remove the package! it works with an Ethernet cable but not wireless, will not allow the virus protector to work, only allows updates that are not security related etc etc. Did find on the Microsoft website a validation download and the result of this was red writing say invalid key........ run out of ideas now so will have to take back to shop and pay for them to remove this software and return to factory settings. At the moment the recovery discs, factory settings etc does not work. Thanks again everyone and Happy New Year

Tilly2010, your first port of call is with Amazon not Microsoft , It is up to Amazon to rectify their mistake ( or their sellers mistake) do you still have the discs from when you first bought the laptop?
