    Installing Windows 7 over Ubuntu

I'd like to start by saying I'm not very good with computers. I'm a complete noob, infact. Which is why it probably was not a good idea to install Ubuntu. But now, I am trying to rectify this problem.

So I popped in the full install version of Windows 7 Home Premium and booted from the disk. I got up to the part where it asks me to select a partition. One is something like 293 GB with no free space, and the other is 8 GB with no free space. It won't let me install on either, and the reason it gives is something like it's not in NTFS format... I don't know what this means.

Please help. And if you do choose to reply, act like you're talking to a preschooler, because I am when it comes to computers. x_x

(In addition alot of Ubuntu forums say 'boot from the live CD' or so, but I installed Ubuntu with a USB stick. Does it matter?)

    Thanks,
    Lisa

You will probably need to format your HD & do a clean install of win7

Well, when I click the Drive Options (Advanced), the only extra thing I can click is "Delete". The other options (Format & Extend) are in grey, and when I try to click them, nothing happens.

If you have saved everything you need off the Ubuntu HD, then delete & format it

Just delete the partitions? It won't have any negative effects besides taking my personal files away?

Format and Delete. Unless you backed up your files they are going to be deleted and gone...
So backup your files that you want to keep.

Burn them to a disc, use a USB thumb drive, Dropbox.com (2 GB free), SkyDrive.com (25 GB free)

Hello LisaZ, welcome to Seven Forums!

The best possible thing for you to do is to completely wipe (secure erase) the HDD so you get rid of, over-write all the old Linux code; if there's nothing on the HDD you need to save, have a look at this tutorial at the link below to see the way to boot the Windows 7 disk and wipe the HDD and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

       Note

Contrary to popular belief, deleting and formatting a Hard Disk Drive does not remove any data at all, it just checks for sector errors and marks the space to be over-written as needed, all the data is still there including all the code from previous/failed installation attempts.

I have nothing worth saving on that computer, I wiped it clean about a month ago.

Uh... stupid question coming up. How do I format? When I delete the partitions will the option become available? Right now the option to format isn ot available.

When you delete it is pretty much the same thing as format. Just select the correct Hard drive formatted or not and let the Windows installer handle the rest. There is no need to over complicate things her or "secure delete" just wastes time. All you should have to do is delete every partition until the drive only shows one. Well if you only have one physical hard drive in the computer.
