Cant install windows to new builds hard drive

Hi guys

Hope you can help, i recieved my new budget rig today but im having trouble installing windows to the new HD i think it could just be a dud.

Everything booted up fine on 1st boot apart from when i forgot to plug in the molex connector for the sata HD . Anyway i boot up the windows 64bit cd and when i get to the partition part there is an error in the corner saying....

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk, the computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk controller is enabled in the bios menu"

I know i have connected it all up properly, sata cable to the board, sata cable from PSU and a molex plugged in as well. I did also notice when i went into the CMD prompt and tried diskpart sometimes when i typed "list disk" it would come up "no disks attached"

I have listed the setup i bought below but am i right in thinking i've been sent a dud HD?

Is there any chance the SATA or molex connectors are loose? Bad cables possibly?

I know of someone that connected a Molex with the SATA power from the PSU and fried the HDD, I hope that isn't the situation with this one, disconnect the Molex and see if it will recognize the drive.

It does not need both power connectors.

One other thing that will cause this is having a thumbdrive or a card reader installed. So make sure that ALL storage media other than you DVD drive andsingle HD you want to install to are unplugged...

Windows will initially see the HDD then later will suddenly want to install to the thumbdrive, then give you grief about it. :/

I managed to sort it by using another spare hd i had installed it with no probs.

As for the 2 power connections indeed i was wrong it does state you use either the sata power or the molex power lol had a proper dim moment there but in saying that the problem i had was happening when i only had 1 power connector connected. Even when i had 2 power connectors plugged in it was still showing in the bios but for some reason would not let me install to it

All sorted thank god it would be boring if it were straight forward i guess

thanks everyone for your help tho much appreciated

Thanks everyone for your help and ideas much appreciated.

If there's one lesson i've learned all be it i believe the HD was faulty at the 1st instance before i plugged 2 power connectors into it no matter how good you think you are always read the lables

Haha spot on matey!!

Got a quick question if someone could help me out. Bascially after setting up this machine for my parents i wanted to sort out a few permissions. I have the standard admin account not the full admin account, i have set up a standard account for both my mum and dad. What i would like to do though is not give them permission to open folders like program files etc as im sure they would delete something by mistake lol

I have red thru the tut and i kind of understand but dont want to remove or do the wrong thing. Do i have to specifically set the permission for every folder i dont want them to access or is there a way i can just set them to be able to read & write etc

thanks again
