First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware.

If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.

SATA Drivers - Load in Windows XP Setup on Dual Boot
    OR
SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD

Your toshiba has a Intel Sata Controller.
You can download your F6 Sata Controller drivers from here:

Hello missindisc, welcome to Seven Forums!

Will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on partition wise?

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a snip of that.

What i would do is install the free version of Partition Wizard (the first link below) to Windows 7 to do a complete partition-specific wipe of the Extended/Logical drive and then delete it and then create and format a single Primary partition using Windows disk management to include the 9MB unallocated space to try the install to.

Have a look at Option Three in this tutorial at the link below for an outline of the wipe (secure erase) process and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.
