I have legal DVDs of both versions slipstreamed. When you buy Windows 7 it comes with both. It's no big deal. I sincerely doubt that's the issue here.

I've also got exactly the same problem. What did work for me is to swap the dvd drive.
You can try the windows dvd with your friend machine. Let the machine to process until it reach where you get the problem. If any machine can pass this process, then just stop and swap that dvd drive to your machine. Now you should be able to install this time. After finish installation, just swap the drive back.

Wipe the HD with at least one set of zeroes to overwrite the XP formatting and possible boot sector corruption. SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation Then use step 2.2 to Partition, format and Mark Active.

Remove all but 2gb of RAM to try install.

If this fails: The slipstreamed DVD could be a prob, so rule it out by writing ISO to flash stick to try install. The method which always works for me is to install UltraISO trial version, on File tab Open ISO, on Bootable tab Write Disk Image, Format, Write. Boot under USB or HD's.

Unplug all other hD's and peripherals.
