Do you know the exact model of your motherboard? I see you have a 945GC chipset, and I assume it's an Intel board (don't think it matters here) but looking at this intel sheet.... Desktop Boards — Supported operating systems it looks like your board ins't supported.

And looking at this link for the Intel® Desktop Board D945GCL states....

The discontinued Intel® Desktop Boards listed below do not have Windows 7* support.
Perhaps you could provide us with a model number of your motherboard?

Thanks gregrocker
Tried your suggestions with no luck as I then discovered that there is a fatal error some where, I think on the motherboard. The machine had been stored since Vesta came out and something, corrosion or something else has caused my inability to install win7. Thanks to all who offered to help with their right-on suggestions.
I guess the last thing I thought to look for was not my ability to install but something was defective in the machine. I have decided to use the unintellegent (lazy))solution and not replace the motherboard but for a little more $$$ I will buy her a new basic machine with win 7 on it. She uses open office, email, a cook book and some games, not much real productivity.
