    laptop help

I have just gone and got a new hd for the laptop as the other one died, it is a 250gb. i went to install xp on there however it wont recognise the drive as its only sp1. I have also a copy of 7 and would like to install xp on there. is there a way for me to use 7 to partition the drive, install 7 into a partition then install xp into a partition and it will still load up. I am not sure as it will be a multi boot and dont know if it will see xp at all or whether it will just boot up into 7 all the time. It is on my partners laptop and I dont want to be wasting time working on that. any ideas on how i can go about this. would i be better downloading a small linux boot disc and using that to partition the drive instead.

Install Seven on the partition. Use the Disk Manager there to partition off another partition.

Then install XP OVER the seven partition! This is IMPORTANT!!!!
XP OVERWRITES the boot manager that Seven sets up, so XP HAS to be installed FIRST!

Then, after XP is installed, you can install Seven to the second partition.
That assumes you want both on there, though it still works if you don't.
