Using the booted Win7 installation DVD you can Sysprep your HD in another machine to remove all drivers, activation and other changes so it will start up on new hardware: Windows 7 Installation - Transfer to a New Computer

But first I would see if it will start on its own.

Ouch - OEM's are tied to the original motherboard, which you are now changing, so it becomes superfulous. You will have to follow WHS's advice, as there isn't any other alternative unfortunately.

Good luck,
Golden
The OEM disc did not come with a system, I bought it with some components, does that make a difference?

On edit, the packaging reads "OEM System Builder Pack"
I am a little confuded: Is this a multiple OEM pack where not all versions have been used yet. In that case, an unused key would work.

I don,t think this is the case, there is a single CD and a single Product key!

How long has it been activated?

The SysPrep tutorial is a new one here which offers great potential for consumers needing to change their installation to new hardware. However it may need to be run from Win7 first to intiate.

I've asked the tutorial author to consult.

Trying it first makes sense, I may get lucky

If I transfer my HD to my wife's machine which is also running 7 will it cause problems with her machine?

I have had ongoing problems with this machine and have re-installed and activated 7 at least 3 times. The most recent was about 6 weeks ago.

What I would do if you don't want to reinstall is SysPrep the Win7 installation HD on another computer using the steps given here: Windows 7 Installation - Transfer to a New Computer

When HD starts up on new hardware attempt to reactivate then use the phone activation if/when it is rejected.

Follow prompts to speak to an agent and explain that you have been having problems with hardware working correctly ever since you installed and need help trying to activate this now that you have sorted the hardware and it seems to be finally working.

If activation agent won't help you, appeal to Customer Service.

OK I will give this a try using the wife's computer. Will the OS on my HD cause a problem if I install it in her machine? Do I need to disengage her OS HD to ensure that it will boot with my OS?

I read the thread through and have basically nothing to add. However, I would like to say this:

If you can boot your system including old motherboard one more time, then you could follow the Method 1 in this tutorial as Greg has told you earlier in this thread. It simply shows you how to remove all hardware dependent information, inclusive SID, then install new hardware and drivers.

Just follow the tutorial carefully.

Kari, if he isn't able to start up again, can he swap out the mobo, then boot Win7 DVD to SysPrep the HD before attempting to start it on new mobo?

If not, then can he move HD to another machine which has all other HD's removed, boot DVD to Sysprep the HD, then move it back to start up with new mobo?
