    Vista -> W7 upgrade fail?

    Hey all,

So I hear W7 is pretty popular now or something

I've been attempting to upgrade my Vista install to 7 recently but have come across a strange issue.

Im currently running x64 Vista Ultimate, and am trying to upgrade to x64 W7 ultimate however whenever I select the x64 package on the disk I have, I'm greeted with this error message:

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Weird no? It seems to be contradicting itself....

So I tried launching the 32 bit package and installing that in case I was wrong and was actually running x86 all these years, and was greeted with:

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

    So great.

    I can't install x64, because apparently I'm running x86, and I can't install x86 because I'm already running x64.

    Good job windows

I've tried 2 W7 ultimate discs, and it's happened with both in exactly the same way, so I suspect the problem lies deep within my Vista installation....

Has anyone come across an error like this before? Or have any suggestions on my next course of action?

Other than a tear down and fresh install over the top I can't see a way out... and it's taken me so long to get my media library's set up and annexed just right I really CBA to be fiddling about again...

    Thanks all!

Hello The Editor, welcome to Seven Forums!

    "select the x64 package"

I'm curious about this statement above, where did you get the installation DVD(s) from, the 32-bit and the 64-bit should be separate DVDs please clarify.

I don't doubt what you say, I didn't mean to start with the 3rd degree.

It sounds as though he may have bungled the job; I use the same and this is what you should get after the install starts; it sounds like he tried to make them boot separately and it didn't work.

    Obtain a known-good 64 bit Win7 Ultimate installer.

How do you plan to activate? If you bought a legitimate Product Key you should have access to an installer download or disk.

No worries, we can all appreciate tone is always hard to judge over the net :)

I get that same screen just without all the other revisions. Only Ultimate x86 and x64.

I've used this disk before for laptops and never had issues.... Although they were x86 based.

If you've successfully used that same installer, perhaps your Vista is in a bad way after all.

I have never had good luck, or trusted running the installer from within a booting OS. I also am not a fan of upgraded installes either. if you have a valid key, I'd back up the data, wipe the drive clean and do a clean, fresh install by booting from the Windows 7 disc.
