how to upgrade to windows 7 pro?

ok, my situation a bit weird.

I bought my laptop and it came with vista business, last September I bought windows 7 Ultimate off ebay and just found out last month when I reformatted my laptop that it is fake and the w7 ultimate key is MSDN key and is now banned by microsoft.

Therefore I am currently running Windows 7 ultimate with banned keys, I just bought and downloaded windows 7 professional upgrade from Microsoft student website and it was surprisingly affordable.

So what do I need to do to upgrade? Will I need to install vista business first before I can upgrade or can I just put in the new windows 7 professional product key in my current windows 7 ultimate, or burn the windows 7 pro upgrade iso and clean install?

    Thanks.

Got taken by a con job at EBay? Join the club! A good number of scammers get on there. be wary!

Now that you have a legitmate purchase you will need to perform a clean install. And yes this can done with 7 upgrade media.

That's one of the tutorials here at SF to look over on this.

my question is how can I proof to Microsoft that I have a valid vista business if I clean install now from W7 ultimate? Won't microsoft ban my keys? I am really scared

And another weird thing my w7 ultimate is current activated??? WFT even the key was invalid? It now actually stopped popping up "windows 7 needs to be activated" bubble anymore.

If the upgrade media you bought was still the Ultimate edition you might still likely want to see a clean install to insure integrity just the same. Following the guide there however will go fast and easy for you to get things on proper. Believe me 7 goes on "much faster" then any of the previous versions!

if people can clean install with windows upgrade, then what is the point of buying the more expensive retail version?

We missed each other's replies. You wouldn't need to worry about any legit keys on a genuine media being blocked at this time.

By following the guide you see 7 installed twice first without entering any key in order to run the setup while in Windows to perform the upgrade install to be activated.

MS allows for this since they want people running a legit 7 machine. The method used has proven itself time and again helping a large number of people out.

Here I went with the full featured Ultimate having run it since beta. I had already made the decision on which edition I would stay with plus alwys buy a full version. But the method can save $100+ for those like students on tight budgets who can't simply pay out for a full version.

Basically Ms accepts your word that you had a valid previous version (Vista Business) :)

Here there would only be one answer I would choose namely getting rid of the bogus to run the genuine. I'm sure the next time you go to buy a new version's media you will be a bit more cautious on who is the seller for sure.

The rest is upto you there. Legit is the word here however.
