The Family pack comes with both the 32-bit and 64-bit installation disks and the product key works on both versions. So yes, you can mix the installs.

Yes, you can do a clean or custom install.

For a clean install, you need to use a small workaround. Heres how.

The Family Pack has one COA sticker that is good for installation on three computers. You dont need to actually stick it on to the machine, just tuck it away safely somewhere. Also, make sure you retain all the packaging, receipts etc.- the family pack is a retail upgrade and the packaging is proof of purchase/ownership.

You cannot rely on Windows.old folder as a backup method, but must backup your files externally before install.

Since you have to do this anyway, you might as well wipe the HD of all code to get the cleanest possible install: SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Then do a Custom install, with drive options to partition as you wish and format, leave Product Key blank during install, then do one of the workarounds given in the tutorial Bill2 links above after install to activate with Upgrade version key. Easiest is the registry edit - set a restore point beforehand.
