    Upgrading CPU and MOBO

This is probably a noob question. I am thinking about upgrading my HP computer's Cpu and MoBo. I currently run i3-530 with stock motherboard H57 chipset. I want to upgrade to i5 2500k with a p67chipset. Windows 7 came preloaded with no installation DVD. What are the chances of upgrading and the system booting right up without having to do a clean install? If I have to reinstall OS can I spare the info on my harddrive or must it be reformatted.

Thank You Very much for your help.:)

@theog. When I decide to take the plunge. Should I buy a windows 7 from where I am buying the cpu and mobo. I just don't know what to expect upon the first boot of the new system. I'll backup everything on my current harddrive. Do I manually do a clean install or will the system walk me through this?

    Thank you.

If you use the old parts from your HP, make sure all parts match, mismatching parts BSOD.
I use maplin's for parts, that's because it is only 100 yards away.

Use the the clean all command, old or new HD.It is worth the time it takes.

    Another option:

You can SysPrep the hard drive as the very last thing you do on the old hardware: Windows 7 Installation - Transfer to a New Computer

Now when you boot up the new Hardware Win7 will install all of the new drivers from it's driverstore and start up just like the first time after install.

Motherboards for the 2500k are all under recall and it will likely be at least 2 months before replacements arrive.

Regarding RAM: go to Crucial.com and enter the model number of your current HP into the configurator. It will spit back the part numbers of compatible RAM for your current PC.

Then find out through Crucial if those same RAM part numbers are compatible with a PC with a P67 chipset. The basic type of RAM should be the same, but the P67 may want RAM of a different voltage (1.5 volts typically) than what you now have on the HP.

You also need to find out if the HP case and power supply are ATX standard, with appropriate connections for any new motherboard you may buy.

    Reregister???

You will have to reinstall all programs if you do a clean install, so get all your necessary product keys at hand.
