    Dual boot - installing XP after 7 - what boots after XP restarts?


    Hello

    I'm trying to make a dual boot installation following Brink's tutorial (Method 2).

    My problem is the following: what should boot after windows XP has first copied the files onto the hard drive (text based) and is supposed to restart into graphical mode? Is the CD then booted or the hard drive? How does the computer then know to boot XP and not 7?

    My data:
    - one SATA drive, different partitions
    (C: system restore
    D: win 7 pro 32 bit
    E: data
    G: (trying to install on this one) )
    - i have a win xp professional with SP3 installation iso that I downloaded from MSDNAA, i have slipstreamed SATA drivers into that using the tutorial and nlite and burned a CD

    I did the following steps:
    - changed my boot order to cd first
    - booted from the CD
    - selected unallocated space on my drive to form a 70GB NTFS partition called G: to install XP pro on
    - XP copies the files onto that
    - XP wants to reboot
    - boot wants to load from the cd, when it does that i'm back to the start of the XP installation process....
    - if i try to boot from the hard drive instead, i get an error (disk error or something, press ctrl+alt+del to restart (NOT "Error loading operating system"))

    I had to use my win 7 installation DVD to restore my boot data and be able to start win 7 again

    What did I do wrong?

    Sounds like you, Press any key at Method two, Step 2 after the first restart of XP install.

    Sorry, that does not help me, step 2 is not after the first restart.

    Did you create your partition using XP CD then full format?

    XP should restart into XP Setup which it has flagged in the partition where install is started. If this fails, try removing the CD. And don't Press Any Key when prompted.

    Yes, I did. Is it possible to try to reset this flag manually?

    I'd just start the install again and don't Press Any Key this time. If the install starts over, then next time remove the CD before it has a chance.

    Try to install Windows XP first
    Last you have to Install Windows 7 like me :)

    I tried that, i get the error message "A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart". This is referring to the hard drive i suppose.

    What should I try next?

    Can this be because of the SATA drivers i loaded? I followed this method step by step, using drivers for the nForce 4 chip on my KN8 SLI motherboard. I would try the floppy disc method but I don't have a drive. if all else fails i might install one. But the HDD showed up all right, so can this be because of the drivers?

    Could it be a drive letter problem? Like flagging the wrong letter, cause i noticed that XP assigns different drive letters in receovery mode and in normal install mode

    Try running Disk Check of all partitions from Win7 or it's System Recovery Options: System Recovery Options

    Run the HD maker's diagnostics/repair extended CD scan: HD Diagnostic

    Next try resetting the BIOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

    Do you have a second HD (perhaps IDE) to try install upon? Unplug the Win7 HD to install, wipe the HD first using Diskpart then format partition using XP CD. Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command

    After install, set Win7 HD as first HD to boot in BIOS setup, then boot XP HD using one-time BIOS Boot Menu key which every computer or mobo has.
