Windows 7: Clean install planning with 2 drives, one SSD one HDD

Another option would be to slipstream SP1 into your retail OEM disk, which you should do anyway before a reinstall, but instead do another Repair Install. Slipstream Windows 7 SP1 into a Installation DVD or ISO File

This was proven to work recently by multiple tests here: Windows 7 SP1 Install Fail 0x8007000e

Windows 7 Professional SP1

Thanks Bare Foot Kid. SO FAR, doing the repair install followed by a reinstall of Office followed by installing SP1 seems to be working OK. I've cleaned up space on my HDD to make room for an image backup, and I'm also running Returnil System Safe (RSS), which has its own VSS-like system restore feature. I'm also configuring things so that RSS will work in virtual mode for me.

Of course, it will take a bit of time before I know for sure that things are solid, and if I do have to do a clean install I'll follow your advice!
